The Influencers: Double denim & the unfortunate G-string moment

In our fashion dance among the decades, we take a look at the 1990 - 2000s. Yes, there was a bit of cringe involved during these years fashion-wise, but thank goodness for one TV programme that saves the day.

1990s

It was the decade of a confusing interplay between rebel and the preppy. Grandparents were left perplexed while closets were raided for a manky old cardigan to wear over dad’s flannel shirt in order to channel grunge gods like Kurt Cobain. Otherwise you were buttoning up like Brenda and Brandon Walsh (Beverly Hills, 90210, 1990–2000).
It was the age of the supermodel, with the likes of Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. And who can forget those Calvin Klein ads with the likes of Mark Wahlberg, Kate Moss and Christy Turlington and the controversy over ‘heroin chic’?

Kate Moss was an iconic model in the 1990s, a remains popular today. Her sultry campaign with Calvin Klein, alongside Mark Wahlberg (below) certainly created a bit of a storm. PHOTO:  Getty Images

2000s

With all sorts of double denim, alongside low-riding jeans and the very unfortunate peeking G-string moment, all we can say is thank goodness for Sex and the City: The Movie (2008). The New York gals had been coutured up to their eyeballs since the series started in 1998. Completely unrealistic, but that’s why we loved it. From the ballerina skirt, Manolo Blahnik shoes and that wedding dress. Thank you Patricia Field.

Suddenly the bikini top became a very popular day-wear item when teamed with mesh. With the influence of girl groups like All Saints and TLC, we were suddenly sporting comfy cargo pants and tight T-shirts with all sorts of bedazzling going on. As for the boy bands? Well, I’m sure they were as unhappy with their stylists as we were.

We loved Sex and the City not just for the hilarious bants and to see what on earth Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was going to say next, but because of the fashion; particularly Carrie's (Sarah Jessica Parker, above) shoes and wardrobe shots. Photo: James Devaney/WireImage/GETTY
